Retreats
Family activities, exercise and education, and relaxing with people who share a common experience. These retreats are an ideal way to bond as a couple or family, spend time with old friends and meet new ones, and renew your overall sense of spirit and well-being.
Support Groups
Support group meetings can provide group members with an invaluable sense of support and understanding. Younger people with PD sometimes shy away from traditional support groups in favor of online support options such chat rooms, message boards, etc. These forums can be incredibly helpful and have the advantage of no geographic or time contstraints. However, traditional support groups where participants meet regularly, in person, can faciliate a very different, and deeply gratifying kind of friendship, connection, and support.
Consider a support group meeting, especially if you are finding it difficult to talk openly about your Parkinson's with others. If you attend a meeting and the group just doesn't seem to be right for you, try another.
APDA is currently working with people nationwide to establish more support groups specifically for those with YOPD. If you are interested in finding a group near you, or in starting a new group, refer to our Networking section for more information (see Young Onset Support Groups).
